Helping children and saving the community. This is the promise of the collaboration between the Foundation and Sister Hirut Tadesse Mekonnen from the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence for Abandoned Children.
The work carried out in Ethiopia by these two united forces goes beyond the construction of a school to become a social commitment, the guarantee of a future.
The Fonko and Lareba Nursery Schools
Fonko School has been active since October 2007, on 22nd January 2008 the education centre was officially inaugurated. Today it houses approximately 300 children.
The Foundation provided for the construction of a well, the salaries of the teaching staff, meals and furnishings for the building. In 2008 the water supply was improved.
In November 2010 this school was decorated and supplied with books, puzzles, toys all relating to Bambi (the famous Walt Disney cartoon).
Since 2009 the Foundation took over the upkeep of the Lareba Nursery school that now accomodates more than 300 pupils.
Other actions
2010 was characterized by health interventions to improve the hygienic conditions in order to avoid epidemics. The population was furnished with soap for both personal use and general washing. 5 tukul (local houses) were also restored.
Future
There is still a lot to do. The infant school does not only have an educational function, but guarantees a social cohesion needed with the aim of integrating the various ethnic groups.
We need to expand the structure and continue to work in order to smooth out the differences.
In the next years it will be strategic to build an efficient pipeline, to guarantee electricity for the 2 villages and set up schools to encourage local artisans. We are also planning to establish medical centers for the 2 villages.

WHY TAKE ACTION?
Ethiopia has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world: 51.8 years. In rural areas, 16% of children go to school and only 25% of the population has access to clean drinking water.
Education is a dream as well as an opportunity for the entire community to grow and develop.
Ethiopia is a country in north east Africa with a population of 85.2 million. It is one of the poorest countries in the world with 6.4 million people practically reduced to famine.
