Home care for children
Everyone has the right to live the final period of their life at home but for children this should automatically be the rule. This situation can be better faced at home among familiar settings and surrounded by the warmth of the family; as long as the family are helped by a very high standard of assistance.
The Fondiaria Sai Foundation has enabled Luce per la Vita to set up a special home assistance network for children together with the hospital facilities and the National health structures whilst assistance is provided by Luce per la Vita.
The Association is able to assist these young patients and their families throughout this difficult journey. Full assistance is guaranteed 24 hours: the parents can use the physiological support or make use the available public structures.
Agreement terms
Following various meetings with the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital in Turin and with the Piedmont Regional Health Inspectorate an agreement was reached on 7th June 2007 with the General Manager of the Aso Oirm - S. Anna in Turin.
As a follow-up in October 2008 the General Manager’s renewed the agreement until December 2010. Palliative Care Assistance has also been extended to other patients in the same age group who also suffer from terminal illnesses.
In 2011 Palliative Care Assistance was confirmed until 31st December 2012 and it was decided to extend to all the young patients who suffer from terminal diseases as well as those afflicted with oncological illnesses. All the paediatricians and General Practitioners have been informed about the protocol renewal and some meetings have been planned with the local paediatric volunteers.
Tomorrow
An extension of the project to other areas which are not covered by the agreement is being considered, according to the guidelines of the Fondiaria Sai Foundation. The experience already achieved will contribute even more in helping children in the final fares of their lives.

WHY TAKE ACTION?
The search for alternatives such as home care has been driven by the critical shortage of hospital beds and the lack of specialized personnel.
Moreover, children seem to respond better to treatment in their own home rather than inside a health facility.
It is an important choice, an experiment that could change the attitude of citizens and institutions.
It is a major contribution to developing the social fabric, which triggers virtuous processes and promotes new synergies capable of having a profound impact on the future of the community.
